Local to me if you need someone to look at it - but full disclosure I don’t know anything about them.

Neither do I.
I just know they’re cool as hell and sell for $8-10k running.

There was one just like this (same one?) for sale for a long time only a mile from me. Think the guy wanted 11k - I posted it maybe 1 8 months ago, consensus seemed to be nice car but CP.
This one is only 20 minutes from me. Kinda wonder if it’s the same car but something went wrong with it.

If you have the time (your skills are without question) then I’d go for this.
We used to get the Alto in Oz and it was a typical late 80s Kei car in that it felt and drove like a lightweight original Mini. Handling was their weak point because they were so light in the back end.
Quite what this one’s handling would be like with AWD is a tempting question. The answer being probably much better. But regardless it won’t be any faster as the turbo has been included to counteract the additional weight of the AWD.
Try not to go Hayabusa straightaway as I have some doubts about the chassis ability and handling response to the engine. Plus getting it to line up with the gearbox and AWD could be tricky anyway...

Looks like it has the same paint chip on the bumper between the RH headlight and mailslot.

He must be really frustrated with it if he wants to just trade it for a Civic,
wonder if somethings really messed up

Good eye! I figured there can’t be more than 1 of those around Chicago...

Going to guess getting parts for it are a huge PITA.

I would just buy it and fix it to have a cool little run-around.
Doubt the wife will bite, but I’m going to try.

I feel like it would be a riot to rip around town in.
Here’s a good question: Can it fit 3 kids? One of which is in a car seat?

Simple answer is yes. A more complete answer may tarnish your chances.
Truth of the matter is that it is an 80s Kei car with all the rigidity of an 80s Plymouth v an...you and yours won’t be any more endangered.

Hey now, my van is 90s thank you!
We dailied a 66 Buick Electra for a while, I don’t spend much time obsessing about “safety”. After driving some new vehicles, I feel I’m more likely to be in a crash in something newer because they don’t have near the visibility ( which creates more chances to crash ), and the safety features make me more inclined to pay less attention.
But that’s a different discussion......
Honestly, if I can talk the wife into this, and I can find parts easy enough, I’m strongly considering getting it.
